Following the release of ‘Drowning’ last month, the Gothenburg duo Citizend return with the third chapter from their debut EP, The Spiral, the hard-hitting ‘Grinding Bones’.
Due for release this December on Majestic Mountain Records, Citizend sidle the boundaries between Americana, post-rock, and post-metal with its members, Emil Gustavsson and Otto Nilsson, sharing a common goal to break down barriers between archetypal genres.
Intertwined with themes that focus on the profound complexities of life, The Spiral is a conceptual journey that spans a lifetime before the world meets its end. Teetering on the brink of an uncertain future, its narratives delve deep into an individual’s thoughts and experiences about the impending apocalypse, from the beginning to the end.
“Our new single ‘Grinding Bones’ captures the relentless pressures of life, illustrating the intense labour, both physical and mental, required to navigate its challenges,” explains Gustavsson. “It’s a testament to managing uncertainty and obscurity in the quest for balance amidst life’s struggles.”
Heavily influenced by stoner rock acts like Queens of the Stone Age, while drawing inspiration from alt-country icons Wovenhand, its catchy chorus melds tribal sounds with more “clenched fist” elements, making it a heavy hitter in Citizend’s discography.
Drawing listeners into a realm of dense and enigmatic Americana Noir, inspired by the likes of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Neil Young, and Swedish artist Christian Kjellvander, when assembled these five chapters form a soot-black palette that paints an intense and gripping voyage. A voyage that captivates the listener and sets the stage for a mesmerizing exploration of sound, narrative, and emotion.
Unfolding as a multi-faceted exploration of life’s journey, from inception to conclusion and in conjunction with heavy-weight champions Majestic Mountain Records, The Spiral EP will be released 6th December and can be pre-ordered here.
“With The Spiral, Citizend sets the stage for a mesmerizing exploration of sound, narrative, and emotion. Each note serves as a brushstroke, painting a vivid portrait of existence itself.”
