“This band, near the conclusion of its own too-short existence, pierced the veil separating its musical style from an ultimate, unbound-by-genre catharsis. Not bad for a couple of pissed-off suburban kids.” PITCHFORK

Due for release this March on Outer Battery Records, Live 1982 is a newly unearthed and ferocious live album capturing cult anti-heroes Void at the height of their power – raw, chaotic, and utterly uncompromising.

Formed in Columbia, Maryland, just north of Washington, D.C., Void emerged from unlikely surroundings to become one of the most confrontational bands of the early DC hardcore scene. Their debut in 1980 at the first-ever Wilson Center show – a legendary 15-band marathon largely organised by the Bad Brains – immediately marked them out as a band apart.

Featuring vocalist John Weiffenbach, guitarist Bubba Dupree, Chris Stover on bass and drummer Sean Finnegan, Void’s sound defied structure, with songs threatening to fly apart at any moment. Every member played at maximum speed, the resulting discord and controlled chaos elevating the quartet to a more dangerous and extreme plane.

Containing pivotal live recordings, Live 1982 professionally captures two crucial moments in the band’s history. The A-side documents Void’s incendiary April 1982 performance at the Wilson Center, recorded just months before the release of the legendary Faith/Void split LP. Sharing the bill with Minor Threat, The Faith, Iron Cross, and Double O, the band delivered a set packed with hardcore classics such as ‘Ignorant People’ and ‘Who Are You?’

While the B-side captures a December 1982 show at D.C.’s iconic 9:30 Club that saw Void take to the stage with Negative Approach. Completely levelling the room with a set that balanced hardcore staples like ‘Time To Die’ and ‘Organized Sports’ alongside newer, heavier, metal-tinged material such as ‘Bloodlust’, a track that would help lay the groundwork for an entirely new strain of aggressive music.

Both performances were professionally recorded by Tom Lyle of Government Issue, preserving Void at their most uncompromising. The release is further elevated by photography from legendary DC scene documentarian Jim Saah and artwork by Dischord designer Jason Farrell.

Pressed on clear vinyl, Live 1982 stands as a vital historical document from one of Washington, D.C.’s most important underground bands. The album is released on 6th March 2026 on Outer Battery Records, who are also offering a web-exclusive limited pressing of 400 copies on glow-in-the-dark green vinyl, complete with a 40-page Void zine. All of which can be pre-ordered here.

The LP is dedicated to those no longer with us: Sean Finnegan (Void), Dave Sweetapple (Outer Battery Records), and Rich Jacobs, who was working on the Void zine right up until the time of his passing.
